Sever's Disease

Grace has been battling ankle pain for the last 6 months.  Finally took her to the doc and the diagnosis is Sever's Disease (see below).  It has to be related to the fact that she grew half and inch in the last 6 weeks and is now officially five foot eight inches!

 About Sever's Disease

Sever's disease, also called calcaneal apophysitis, is a painful bone disorder that results from inflammation (swelling) of the growth plate in the heel. A growth plate, also called an epiphyseal plate, is an area at the end of a developing bone where cartilage cells change over time into bone cells. As this occurs, the growth plates expand and unite, which is how bones grow.
Sever's disease is a common cause of heel pain in growing kids, especially those who are physically active. It usually occurs during the growth spurt of adolescence, the approximately 2-year period in early puberty when kids grow most rapidly. This growth spurt can begin any time between the ages of 8 and 13 for girls and 10 and 15 for boys. Sever's disease rarely occurs in older teens because the back of the heel usually finishes growing by the age of 15, when the growth plate hardens and the growing bones fuse together into mature bone.
Sever's disease is similar to Osgood-Schlatter disease, a condition that affects the bones in the knees.

Causes

During the growth spurt of early puberty, the heel bone (also called the calcaneus) sometimes grows faster than the leg muscles and tendons. This can cause the muscles and tendons to become very tight and overstretched, making the heel less flexible and putting pressure on the growth plate. The Achilles tendon (also called the heel cord) is the strongest tendon that attaches to the growth plate in the heel. Over time, repeated stress (force or pressure) on the already tight Achilles tendon damages the growth plate, causing the swelling, tenderness, and pain of Sever's disease.
Such stress commonly results from physical activities and sports that involve running and jumping, especially those that take place on hard surfaces, such as track, basketball, soccer, and gymnastics. It can even result from standing too long, which puts constant pressure on the heel. Poor-fitting shoes can contribute to the condition by not providing enough support or padding for the feet or by rubbing against the back of the heel.

Signs and Symptoms

The most obvious sign of Sever's disease is pain or tenderness in one or both heels, usually at the back. The pain also might extend to the sides and bottom of the heel, ending near the arch of the foot.
A child also may have these related problems:
  • swelling and redness in the heel
  • difficulty walking
  • discomfort or stiffness in the feet upon awaking
  • discomfort when the heel is squeezed on both sides
  • an unusual walk, such as walking with a limp or on tiptoes to avoid putting pressure on the heel
Symptoms are usually worse during or after activity and get better with rest.

Diagnosis

A doctor can usually tell that a child has Sever's disease based on the symptoms reported. To confirm the diagnosis, the doctor will probably examine the heels and ask about the child's activity level and participation in sports. The doctor might also use the squeeze test, squeezing the back part of the heel from both sides at the same time to see if doing so causes pain. The doctor might also ask the child to stand on tiptoes to see if that position causes pain.
Although imaging tests such as X-rays generally are not that helpful in diagnosing Sever's disease, some doctors order them to rule out other problems, such as fractures. Sever's disease cannot be seen on an X-ray.

Treatment

The immediate goal of treatment is pain relief. Because symptoms generally worsen with activity, the main treatment for Sever's disease is rest, which helps to relieve pressure on the heel bone, decreasing swelling and reducing pain.
As directed by the doctor, a child should cut down on or avoid all activities that cause pain until all symptoms are gone, especially running barefoot or on hard surfaces because hard impact on the feet can worsen pain and inflammation. The child might be able to do things that do not put pressure on the heel, such as swimming and biking, but check with a doctor first.
The doctor might also recommend that a child with Sever's disease:
  • perform foot and leg exercises to stretch and strengthen the leg muscles and tendons
  • elevate and apply ice (wrapped in a towel, not applied directly to the skin) to the injured heel for 20 minutes two or three times per day, even on days when the pain is not that bad, to help reduce swelling
  • use an elastic wrap or compression stocking that is designed to help decrease pain and swelling
  • take an over-the-counter medicine to reduce pain and swelling, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin)
Note: Children should not be given aspirin for pain due to the risk of a very serious illness called Reye syndrome.
In very severe cases, the doctor might recommend that the child wear a cast for anywhere from 2 to 12 weeks to immobilize the foot so that it can heal.

Recovery and Recurrence

One of the most important things to know about Sever's disease is that, with proper care, the condition usually goes away within 2 weeks to 2 months and does not cause any problems later in life. The sooner Sever's disease is addressed, the quicker recovery is. Most kids can return to physical activity without any trouble once the pain and other symptoms go away.
Although Sever's disease generally heals quickly, it can recur if long-term measures are not taken to protect the heel during a child's growing years. One of the most important is to make sure that kids wear proper shoes. Good quality, well-fitting shoes with shock-absorbent (padded) soles help to reduce pressure on the heel. The doctor may also recommend shoes with open backs, such as sandals or clogs, that do not rub on the back of the heel. Shoes that are heavy or have high heels should be avoided. Other preventive measures include continued stretching exercises and icing of the affected heel after activity.
If the child has a pronated foot, a flat or high arch, or another condition that increases the risk of Sever's disease, the doctor might recommend special shoe inserts, called orthotic devices, such as:
  • heel pads that cushion the heel as it strikes the ground
  • heel lifts that reduce strain on the Achilles tendon by raising the heel
  • arch supports that hold the heel in an ideal position
If a child is overweight or obese, the doctor will probably also recommend weight loss to decrease pressure on the heel.
The risk of recurrence goes away on its own when foot growth is complete and the growth plate has fused to the rest of the heel bone, usually around age 15.

Champs

Gracie's team won first place in a soccer tournament this weekend,  There were 12 teams in her age range - from all over Northern California.

Grace did not get to plan a lot because she is nursing a bad ankle.  In fact, its about time to take her to the Doc and get it looked at.

Gracie is known as loving t-rex's - this is her, Coach and Bug all doing a "t-rex" to celebrate the win!

Her friend Ry just got a t-shirt saying "I am rexy and I know it" and has a big t-rex on the front of it.  So silly!

Date Nite

Last nite, Drew and I had a date nite!  We went to an Earthquakes game together.

It was Lenhart Wig nite.  Lenhart is an Earthquakes player who has a big mop of blond hair.  It was so funny to see a bunch of fans all wearing the wigs.

It was an awesome game with the Earthquakes tying the game in the last second!

The funniest part was when we got home and Drew was still wearing the wig - Ahi was so scared that she  peed!

Tongue Crib

Tongue Crib – An appliance used to prevent the tongue from thrusting forward

Gracie is getting a new orthodontic device next week:  a tongue crib.  It goes in the top of her mouth to prevent her tongue from pushing against her teeth.  Her tongue is pushing so hard against the teeth that the orthodontist is not able to close her bite and finish the treatment.  Hopefully this will work!

Gym attire

Funny things happen in the gym.  Remember the woman who used to parade around stark naked in her high heels in the locker room?  She moved on.  But now there is a woman who does yoga wearing a white bra with gold sparkly polka-dots and hot pink straps.  NOT just the bra, but she might as well be since she is wearing a see thru white t-shirt over it....and blue yoga pants that look like they are from the 80's.  I am no fashion maven (even though someone recently called me glamorous!) - but I know see thru clothes are not right for the gym at work.....or anywhere else, really!

Heart Party Food

Tina did an amazing job doing the food for my Dad's party.  It tasted great and looked beautiful!

We had two types of meat, tortillas, beans, rice, salad, fruit, chips nacho cheese and salad.  Guests could make burritos, nachos or taco salad.

Water Heater Blew!

When we woke up Saturday morning, we had no water pressure in our bathroom sink.  Jim got up and went around the house checking all the sinks and then walked out into the garage and said "uh oh"!

The water heater had sprung a leak - a leak of hot water - and the garage was like a sauna.

A few hours and a thousand dollars later and we had a brand new 100 gallon hot water heater!

Squirrel Pillow

We found Daisy sleeping like this tonite.  That is the dog's stuffed squirrel toy that she is sleeping on!

Bunny Antics

This morning the bunny came running out of her hutch and bee-lined it for some bunch grass.  She ferociously pulled it out and went running back to her hutch with a mouth full of it.

She ran into the corner in the hutch and positioned it into what looks like a nest.

Then she came running back out and repeated the gathering of grass and putting it into the nest.

She did this a bunch of times.

I can't wait to get home from work to see what she has built.

And see if I have any bunch grass left in my yard!

Joan Lunden

I was at a work event today with people from other companies and at the end of the event a woman came up to me and said, "I bet you get this a lot but you look so attractive and glamorous just like Joan Lunden".    I was stunned and had no idea what to say.  I am not sure why I was so stunned -  was it because:

a.  No one has EVER described me as "glamorous".

OR

b.  I immediately thought - "wow - I think Joan Lunden is OLD!"

But in the end, I came home and looked her up and found this picture and said to myself, "if I look like her, that is awesome....she is hot!"

Snicker Salad Silliness

Before reading make sure you have seen the Snicker Salad recipe I posted last week.....

The girls (Grace, Kayla and Bug) made the snicker apple salad for dinner tonite and it was hilarious…..

They were cutting and chopping and mixing and chatting….

And then Kayla says…..”this looks like more of a dessert then a salad.”

Then they cut and chop and mix and chat some more….

And Kayla says….”mmmmm, this looks good…..this is the kind of salad that I would like.”

Then they cut and chop and mix and chat some more….

And Kayla says….”when does the lettuce go in it?”

Then I start cracking up and Grace says, “there is no lettuce in it!”

And Kayla says….”now this is my kinda salad!”

It really should not be called a “salad”!

Dan O'Brien

Today at work, Dan O'Brien, Olympic gold medalist in the decathlon came to speak.  He was really interesting.  I find it fascinating to try to understand what makes people do something like strive for a gold medal.  It is such a remarkable confluence of physical, mental and emotional abilities.

15 Year Heart Celebration

Today we had a party to celebrate the 15th Anniversary of my Dad's heart transplant.  We had about 40 people there and enjoyed a big Mexican meal.

These were chocolate cupcakes and with raspberry filling and vanilla cupcakes with lemon filling --- with my Dad's picture on them!

We had these beautiful flower arrangements on each table.

We surprised my parents with a special gift for the occasion - a new ipad!

Auntie D, me, Grace and Mimi made parting gifts for our guests - m&m's in little bags with hearts that said "thank you".

One of my parents friends sent them this flower arrangement that looks just like Pepper!

Two of the highlights of the day were the slide show my brother put together (I hope to post that later) and these mementos from the past 15 years!

It was a really memorable day for a great celebration!

Went to see Magic Mike last nite with a bunch of girlfriends and it was HILARIOUS!  Totally worth grabbing some girlfriends and going together!

The results are in....

Who is this?
The votes have been counted:

Drew:  53.3%

A Day at the Lake

We spent Sunday at Lake Don Pedro.  We did some tubing on our new inner tube and jet skied.

When we left at 3 pm it was 104 degrees!  Which is actually a perfect day for the lake.  You got hot and jumped in - then you dried in a few minutes and could repeat the jumping in!

Daisy Mae swam and fetched NON-STOP ALL DAY!

Murray and Ahi were made to get in and cool off every so often.

A good day was had by all!

A Good Dog Day

A good dog day at the lake!
