Super Blood Blue Moon - January 31, 2018

The night before the Super Blood Blue Moon

Early this morning, we were all pretty excited to see an event that last happened in 1866 and wouldn't happen again in our lifetime -- the super, blood, blue moon.

  • Super moon is a moon that is closer to the earth than normal and 14% brighter.
  • Blue moon is the second full moon in a month period time.
  • Blood moon is a total lunar eclipse which gives a red tone to the moon.

G got up at 3 am and took pics for the next 2.5 hours.   Luckily her new lens arrived the day before so she was ready to go.  Below are two of the best.

Milky Way over Yosemite

Grace entered this photograph of the "Milky Way over Yosemite", that she took at the end of last year, in a photography contest and was named as a finalist!  She will know if she wins first thru fourth place in mid-February.  Stay tuned.

Warrior Wars and Nuns?

So....it's Warrior Wars at school and it's G's senior year.  So....it's the last chance to enjoy herself during her self professed favorite week of school!  They do silly things like bubble soccer, spoons contests, silent basketball, basketball game against the teachers, dressing up in their class colors, etc.

And for some reason that I do not fully understand, they decided to dress up as nuns....

Bug, on the far left, looks like an expert prayer.  Her form is good and she looks like she means it.

K, in the middle, looks like she sort of means it but could decide to go bad at any moment.

G, on the far right, looks like she might be holding a gun between her prayer hands!

Mail

This is what happens when you don't check your mail box very frequently and can never remember you box number.  We got smart and decorated our box with a sticker so we could recognize it.  Brilliant!

White Elephant - TNDC

TNDC white elephant did not disappoint!  Gift of the nite -- big girl panties!

Santa mooner

Tacky candelabra!

Quilting

G has been using her specially made quilting table to make my new quilt!

Check back for a finished product - although it may be awhile because she is back in school full time! I sure hope it doesn't take until summer.

Terrarium

A couple weekends ago G and I did a trip to Santa Cruz with backpacker Liz and her daughter.  We stopped at DIG and we made this super cute terrarium with air plants.

Upgrade

We did a couple small upgrades at the cabin.  New blinds and curtains downstairs and new curtains upstairs.  I am super happy with both.

Moon Time

G took the shot above today over by McClure Lake.  It was taken at about 3 pm.

These two were taken at the cabin at dusk.

Hops - 3.4 years old

We went on a boondoggle today and took the opportunity to photograph Hops.   In the pic above she went behind this gate that was posted "Trespassers will be Prosecuted"!  So this is what she would look like in jail!

These pics are at McClure Lake.  She is patiently waiting for us to release her so she could fetch her stick.

 Action shots!

Belmont Visit

Belmont Mansion

Grace and I did a visit to Belmont last week for a proper tour.  Our last visit was just a walk through on our own on a Sunday morning.  But now that she has been officially accepted we decided we needed to do a real tour.

We spent a rainy Monday learning about the campus, the nursing program and the extra curricular opportunities.  Then we toured the whole campus.  As you can see from the pics, the campus is beautiful!

Dining area

The south was having unusually cold weather.   Luckily we were able to get in and out between storms as a few days later, classes were cancelled due to snow.

The Bell Tower

Grace hasn't made a final decision yet but it is a very strong contender for a final decision.

Great Falls National Park

Last week I was in Washington DC for business and spent the night with Uncle Richard and Aunt Roberta.  We went for a hike at Great Falls National Park.   I love going to National Parks I have never visited and had never even heard of this one!

The Potomac River

Oh....this one.....

Recently Ahi ate Daisy Mae's pain meds.  That means a 14 pound dog took the narcotic prescribed for a 75 pound dog.  You do the math!

Luckily I realized it immediately and jumped into action.  My plan was to give her peroxide so that she would barf it up.  I called the vet to get the correct dosage and they explained that new studies are showing peroxide ingestion causes ulcers in the esophagus.   Well.....if anyone was going to end up with ulcers in the esophagus it would be Ahi!

So onto Plan B.  I rushed her to the emergency vet and they gave her meds to throw up.  Then they gave her meds to stop her from barfing.  Then they gave her charcoal to soak up the residual drugs in her stomach.

Next they wanted to keep her for 12 hours and watch her but I declined and said I would watch her at home.  I knew I had caught it so early that the barfing got 99% out of her system.  I took her home and all turned out well.

Expect for the part where it cost me $300 and I missed my Dad's birthday dinner!

Bad Ass Families

We went hiking today with one of my bad ass ladies backpacking partners, Liz, and her family.  It was fun to meet her daughters as I have only heard about them.   Her husband picked out the hike for us which was about 2.5 miles straight up hill and then 1.5 miles downhill.  It was a tough hike but felt great after all the indulgences of the holidays!

Quilt

I love the quilt that G made for herself so I asked her to make me one.  We went to the fabric store today and I picked out my own fabric.  It all started with the llama fabric!

And then Jim was so excited about quilting that he decided G needed her own quilting table!  So off he goes to build one!

Stand by for final product.
