Hawthorne Main Street |
On our road trip, we took a side trip to Hawthorne NV to see where Grandma Anna grew up. There is not much to Hawthorne, we could have seen it all in about 5 minutes, but we took some time and went to Walker Lake, the museum and had some lunch.
Walker Lake is down 147 feet from where it used to be - which is HUGE - and interesting because it has no natural outlet. That means that the water level is down because of natural absorption and evaporation and because the water that flows into it has been diverted for agriculture.

Next we went to the local museum which is a nice little museum. We started talking to the ladies who work there and they were thrilled to hear about Jim's grandmother who lived there in the 40's. They took out all their resources and started doing research for us. They found tax assessment records, news paper articles on Grandma Anna's stepbrother who died after being kicked by a horse in Tahoe and advertisement about Jim's grandmother's dress shop. They even found the address of where Anna and her mother lived and we went by and checked it out.
It was really fun to imagine Anna growing up in this sleepy town.
