This is a blog by a "real" mom for other "real" moms. I am no fakey who is wonderful at everything....I do a lot of different things and try to do them well...but when it comes right down to it, I am just an average mom trying to do the right thing to ensure my family is happy and healthy and that my kids grow up able to take care of themselves and get out of my hair.

Happy Anniversary
Just in case you were just starting to think, wow....Chris and Jim aren't that old....this will change your mind: Today is our 18th wedding anniversary! Eighteen years of wedded bliss! Honestly, I have to keep him as a husband because:
He is the only man on this earth who says: "No chickens!" and then comes home from work at nite and says "how were the ladies today".
He is the only man who I can trust to not want another dog and within a week of getting one, say, "she is really cute."
He is the only man who will stay during a party with all my girlfriends and get drinks for them.
He is just a plain old good guy....very worthy of hanging out with for the next 18 years!

You won't believe this!
I was talking with a neighbor yesterday who told me that one of the mail carriers who delivers to our house harrasses Daisy Mae by standing on the lawn and waving his arms and jumping around while looking in the window at her! And last week he was on his hands and knees tormenting her from the front yard. My neighbor said Daisy goes crazy - running from window to window!!!
We were FURIOUS when we heard this! I respect the mail carriers by keeping my dog inside when they are delivering mail....they should respect my dog by not tormenting her from her own front yard!
So I called the mail carrier's manager today and gave him the details. I told him if it does not stop we will be videotaping him and I assured him he did not want a video tape of this type of behavior as I am sure it would make it onto youtube.

There was a whole discussion over an email alias today about the best place in the bay area to get tattoos. And I am NOT kidding.

Day 2
So, Ahi has only been with us for about 24 hours and she has made quite a bit of progress but has a looooong way to go! She is such a nervous nelly! She slept with Drew on the couch for an hour last nite then snuggled with him again this morning, only to bark at him 10 minutes later when he walked down the stairs. It was like she never saw him before.
She is most afraid of Jim and most comfortable with me. I posted this pic of Jim and her and Daisy to show you the size difference. Don't worry that Jim looks half dead - he is - he has a bad cold. And just woke up. Daisy is doing well with her - she does her normal behavior of ignoring her.

Ahi Wasabi
Daisy and Ahi seem to get a long fine. No aggression at all from either of them. They seem interested in each other on and off.
Ahi is very scared as she was just rescued from the shelter last Thursday, fostered for 3 days with an older woman (and her 6 chihuahuas - that is a whole other story!), and then spayed yesterday! So it has been a rough week for her. I plan to give her a couple days to get adjusted and heal from her surgery and then its training drill Sergeant time!
She has been hanging out with me in my office - she is in a crate. She is happy as long as I don't leave the room. I hope this all goes ok! Stay tuned.

What is an Ahi?
A. A type of tuna
B. A sushi roll
C. A Japanese sneeze
D. A chihuahua/weiner dog mix that we just adopted
The answer is A and D!
Her name is Ahi Wasabi - That means hot tuna doggie! She is getting spayed on Monday, so we won't actually have her until Tuesday. She is a cute little thing and we can't wait to introduce her to our home and family. Pics to come later in the week.

Antelope dinner
Jim was so proud of his antelope dinner that he took pics. I was disgusted by the meat - it smelled horrific! But the rest of it, which Drew and I made, was delicious....broccoli, harvest grains with carrots, pasta with garlic and olive oil and tomatoes with marinated mozzarella and balsamic vinegar.

Rock Slide in Yosemite
SCARY... I often think of this while ice skating in Curry Village.
(10-08) 12:30 PDT YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK -- The Curry Village resort in Yosemite National Park was ordered evacuated today after the second rock slide in two days struck cabins, knocked down trees and sent plumes of dust into the air.
Two children suffered cuts and other minor injuries, a park paramedic said.
All occupants of the more than 600 tent and wooden cabins and a small, hotel-style building at Curry Village have been evacuated as a precaution, according to a hotel clerk.
The slide occurred shortly before 7 a.m. and sent boulders into the area near the village amphitheater, witnesses said.
"I heard a huge rumbling," said Dennis Steffen, who works at the nearby Yosemite Stables. "It echoed through the whole valley. You could feel it. A huge plume of dust went up."
Curry Village, founded in 1899, includes the most modestly priced accommodations in Yosemite Valley. It has 427 tent cabins and 180 cabins with baths, along with communal facilities, restaurants and shops. It is located in the eastern end of the valley.
On Tuesday afternoon, another rock slide struck the same area. No one was injured in that slide, which reportedly struck only an unoccupied tent cabin. Part of Curry Village was ordered evacuated afterward.
In July 1996, a slab of granite weighing as much as 162,000 tons broke loose from Glacier Point and plummeted onto the Happy Isles area about a mile east of Curry Village. The massive blast of air caused by the rockfall knocked over 500 trees, one of which killed a 20-year-old man from Southern California who was near an ice cream stand. Four other people were injured, including a woman who was left paralyzed.
Tom Trujillo of New Milford, Conn., who was attending photography classes at Yosemite Institute, told the Associated Press that he had seen today's rock slide.
"Trees were crushed all over the place," he said. "It was a really big mess. Tents were crushed, trees were knocked down, hard cabins were moved out of their positions, with boulders blocking their doorway."
Carol McElligott, a clerk at the Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite Village, told The Chronicle that the sound of the slide was a "very loud rumble and it went on and on and on." The dust cloud rose hundreds of feet in the air, she said, and was still visible nearly four hours later.
"Mother Nature owns this park," McElligott said, "and she changes it all the time."

Home Home on the Range....
This is the song I sang last nite during dinner. I changed the versions every so often, but you get the idea:
Oh, give me a home where the buffalo roam
And the deer and the antelope don't play
Where seldom is heard a suffering word
And the bbqs are not smokey all day
Home, home on the range
Where the deer and the antelope can't play
Because antelope is crispy
And the deer are left lonely all day
Oh, give me a home where the buffalo roam
And the deer and the antelope don't play
Where seldom is heard a suffering word
And the bbqs are not smokey all day
Home, home on the range
Where the deer and the antelope can't play
Because antelope is crispy
And the deer are left lonely all day

Random Thoughts
It has been a while since I have posted random thoughts. I think I have been too busy to ponder random thoughts...but I had a thought this morning....
There are two things that I have been really enjoying lately:
* Steel cut oatmeal
* "Three Cups of Tea" by Greg Mortenson
They are not related at all, so don't try to find the link.
Steel cut oatmeal is also known as Irish oatmeal and it is way less processed that our Quaker Oats oatmeal. That means it is really "meaty" and has a nutty flavor. Grace says that it tastes like rice if you don't put brown sugar on it! Anyway, I eat if for breakfast with golden raisins, brown sugar and walnuts. It is really yummy - you should try it! I buy it at Trader Joes. I have also seen it at Nob Hill - but it was way more expensive.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steel-cut_oats
"Three Cups of Tea" is a book about an amazing American who built schools in Pakistan. The book not only gives you a better understanding of that part of the world but it also highlights the good in people and the similarities of people regardless of your location, religion or ethnic background. "Three Cups of Tea", refers to: the first cup of tea with someone - you are a guest, the second cup of tea - you are a friend, the third cup of tea - you are family. Nice way to look at life.

San Diego Birthday Weekend
Grace and I are back from our girls weekend in San Diego to celebrate her 9th birthday! We had a wonderfully, quiet, blissful time! That means there were no fighting kids and older brother drama! Here are the highlights:
* Went to Old Town San Diego and had lunch, made a candle and took a horse and carriage ride. Turns out that the buggy driver worked in Yosemite for years as a teenager. So we talked about the Iron Door Saloon!
* Went to Legoland. Enjoyed the mini lego cities. Had some drama when a 10 year old girl with obvious behavioral issues got onto a tour boat for lego cities and she tried to jump off! We waiting for 10 minutes for her to calm down, reseated her in the back of the boat and tried again....nope! She tried to jump off again. So the poor thing had to be hauled off kicking a screaming. Very sad.
* Went to Wild Animal Park and took a photo safari. This meant we went in the back of a safari truck to to see the animals close up! What a thrill it was to feed giraffes! And we got quite a kick out of the ostriches - which are like giant grumpy chickens!
* The last day was a quiet day. We went for a long walk on the beach and did some swimming.
All in all a great way to spend a birthday!

No Otis for us!
Just got word that Otis went to another home. Too bad for him because he would have been one lucky dog to live with us. But as wise men say....it was not meant to be.

Letter of Recommendation
I am still waiting the hear about Otis and the wait is seeming endless.....so to keep my self busy, it was time to collect letters of recommendations from dogs we take care of. There are two - one from Lucy and one from Chad. I sent them to the French Bulldog Rescue folks and hope that it helps are chances. I thought you would all enjoy them! So, here goes....
Hello,
My name is Lucy. Chris' Family always takes care of me when my family has to go out of town and I LOVE it at their house (see the pic of me being loved)! But that is not the story I want to tell you.
I want to tell you the time that Chris and Jim saved my life!
One morning when I was a puppy, I got a little rambunctious in my crate and got myself hooked in the mouth by a bungee cord that was hooked to the top of my crate. I was stuck and bleeding and my family could not get me unhooked! It was scary.
So my mom called Chris at 6 am and said that they had an emergency and needed help. Chris and Jim came over to my house in a flash and had me unhooked and safe within 30 seconds of being in the house! My mom says Jim should wear a Superman cape (that’s Jim rubbing my belly)!
Ever since then I knew I could trust them to take care of me!
And you should trust them to take care of Otis Too! Plus, I want to meet Otis. I think he will want to play with Daisy and I.
Love,
Lucy

Letter of Recommendation II
Dear Bull Dog Rescue Group,
My name is Chad and I am a beagle. And although I don’t like to admit it, I have special needs. You see…I have terrible allergies. They are so bad that I sometimes take 6 different medicines at once. AND, I don’t like them!
Anyway, every year my family goes to Maine for 2 weeks in the summer. When they go there, I can’t go with them because I am afraid of airplanes. So instead of going with them, I go to the PML Summer Camp. This means Chris and Family take care of me and take me to their cabin in the mountains. When I am with them, they take extra special care of me, including taking me for walks everyday, taking me camping, taking me hiking, letting me watch deer, giving me all my medicine and letting me lay in front of the air conditioner when it is hot out. But more than anything they treat me like a family member and take extra care because of my special needs. At night when we camp, I get to sleep in a sleeping bag with someone or they help me put on my doggy Patagonia and then wrap me like a doggy burrito in a blanket. Daisy Mae is also always very kind to me and even let’s me sleep in her bed while I am visiting. I always bring my own bed….but I like Daisy’s better.
The first year that Chris took care of me, my kids (well…the kids I live with) were young and very sad that I was not able to go with them on vacation. Chris wanted to make sure the kids knew that I was taken care of so she put together a scrapbook called, “Chad’s Summer Vacation”. The picture showed here is me and Daisy Mae dressed as Sonny and Cher. The scrapbook is a favorite of my family’s and sits on our living room table so that it can be shared. I am always a little embarrassed by my celebrity status, but when you look this good in a wig, everyone treats you special!
So, I just wanted to put in a good word for Chris and Family as there is no other family that could take better care of a dog.

Bagel Day - # 2 - Why I Love Where I Work!
This is in reference to Bagel Wednesday, which was instituted last week at work:
Are they gone?”
Cecil peered fearfully from a file cabinet at tattered bits of bagel boxes on which employee swarms had descended moments before. They had consumed the bagels, staples, and other loose objects in seconds. Even paint strips had been gouged from the walls.
“I think so,” Amit said, poking his head out from behind a copy machine. He paused, seeing a familiar form lying prone by the mailboxes. “Ron, are you all right?”
“My leg!” Ron groaned. “They gnawed off my leg!”
“I think we need a better plan for next week,” Amit said. “Like maybe John could deliver the bagels under lock and key and nobody gets near them until a time lock opens?”
“Or maybe we could randomly generate bagel lottery numbers on my Mac,” Ron said, hopping on one foot. “It shouldn’t take more than a few weeks to set that up.”
“Or maybe we could just get more bagels,” Cecil said. “It seems like that would be easier.”
And so it would.
Tomorrow morning we will have more bagels, and we will be putting them out by the mailboxes at 9 a.m. so they aren’t all gone before most legal employees fight their way here through traffic. It’s a bold plan, a crazy plan, but it just might work.
Turn up tomorrow and find out!
******
I know it seems petty and unimportant....but bagel Wednesdays are one of the highlights of my week! Free bagels and the comedy that comes with them! Ilove my job!

New Injury
My whole goal for having my shoulder surgery was to be able to stop taking my anti-inflamatory and pain medication. Which I finally did about 7 months after the surgery. That was about 6 weeks ago. Since then I have had random aches and pains all over my body - first my tooth, then my hip, now the bottom of my feet! Clearly the anti-inflamatory was not just helping my shoulder, it was helping my whole body!
This morning I worked out and then sat at my desk with my feet sitting on a bag of ice! It was total torture!!!

Bagel Days!
Yet another reason I love where I work - I got this email this afternoon:
Your Ops team was sitting around doing what it does best (sitting around), when a few of us reflected longingly on the Good Old Days of Yore—days when the company used to provide bagels for us in the morning.
“Back then, a man could be fat as well as lethargic,” Ron lamented.
“We used to hoard bagels. I once built a whole cube made out of bagels,” Cecil recalled.
“I hear we once had an office made out of bagels,” Karen said, “but it didn’t last the winter.”
“Hey guys, I know where Jamie, the finance lady, keeps the key to her rubber stamp drawer,” Amit said.
Thus were Bagel Wednesdays restored to Legal Kingdom. Starting tomorrow, and every Wednesday morning thereafter until Jamie calls a locksmith, we’ll provide fresh bagels in the main central mailbox area. Stop by and grab some.

Presidential Survey
Time for a very unscientific survey. Please click on the link below and vote:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=H9x1bsaNz5csgEwGET_2byjg_3d_3d
I will report the results next week.
There are no controls on the survey that prevent multiple votes from the same person....so "don't come early and come often"! One vote per person!

Otis Too
I know many of you are going to think I am crazy for this but this is Otis Too and I have applied to adopt him! He is a french bulldog who is currently being fostered in Arizona. His mama had to give him up because she had to go back to work full time and could not give him the care he needed.I have been looking to add a french bulldog into our family for a couple years now.... I have consistently looked at the rescue organizations, but never found a frenchie who seemed like a perfect fit for our family:
* had to be ok with being in a two dog family,
* had to be ok with a big yellow hound,
* had to be ok with kids,
* had to be active and playful.
Well - Otis seems to fit the bill! He is living with a big mastiff and playing his heart out!
We should hear something in the next couple weeks - the problem is....with a handsome guy like this, there are multiple suitors!
Wish me luck!

Soccer starts this weekend!
This is the quarter jar for Gracie's team. Every time the team scores, all the fans have to put a quarter in the jar. Then we use the money for an end of the season party. The last couple years her team kicked butt so we have loads of cash at the end of the season.
Gracie's team has a bunch of girls on it that she has played with before and they are all good, so she should have a pretty good team. Her coach wants her to play forward and goalie.
Drew's team is a brand new competitive team. A bunch of them played together last year in a recreation league and they were great. This year they are playing comp, which will be harder. They have been working their butts off in practice, so it will be interesting to see how they do. At the very least, they all look so handsome in their new uniforms!

Helping Great Grandma
A couple weeks ago, my parents went back to Chicago and helped clean out and clean up my Grandma's house. This is the house that my Dad grew up in. My Grandma is living there with my Aunt Barb but is starting to need more care. So all the siblings (3 boys and 3 girls) met there for a work week to start the process of moving her out and selling the house for funds to pay for her care. What a cool old house with lots of memories.

New Bike for Jim?
I have been looking for a new bike for Jim. Our friend who works as a bicycle engineer (he LOVES his job!), recommended the bike below which was for sale on craigslist. I think it is perfect for Jim:
Bike for sale
What kind of bike? I don't know, I'm not a bike scientist. What I am though is a manly guy looking to sell his bike. This bike is made out of metal and kick ass spokes. The back reflector was taken off, but if you think that deters me from riding at night, you're way wrong. I practiced ninja training in Japan's mount Fuji for 5 years and the first rule they teach about ninja biking is that back reflectors let the enemy know where you are. Not having a rear reflector is like saying "SCREW YOU CAR, JUST TRY AND FIND ME".
The bike says Giant on the side because it's referring to my junk, but rest assured even if you have tiny junk that Giant advertisement is going to remain right where it is.
I bought this bike for 300 dollars from a retired mercenary that fought in both World War 1 and World War 2 and had his right arm bitten off by a shark in the Phillipines while stationed there as a shark handler. When he sold it to me I had to arm wrestle him for the honor to buy it. I broke his arm in 7 places when I did. He was so impressed with me he offered me to be his son but I thought that was sissy shit so I said no way.
The bike has some rusted screws, but that just shows how much of a bad ass you are. Everyone knows rusted screws on a bike means that you probably drove it underwater and that's bad ass in itself. Those screws can be replaced with shiny new ones, but if you're going to go to that trouble why not just punch yourself in the balls since you're probably a dickless lizard who doesn't like to look intimidating.
The bike is for men because the seat is flat or some shit and not shaped like a dildo. If you like flat seated bikes you're going to love this thing because it doesn't try to penetrate your ass or anything.
I've topped out at 75 miles per hour on this uphill but if you're just a regular man you'll probably top it out at 10 miles per hour. This thing is listed as a street bike which is man-code for bike tank.
The bike has 7 speeds in total:
Gear 1 - Sissy Gear
Gear 2 - Less Sissy
Gear Gear 3 - Least Sissy Gear
Gear 4 - Boy Gear
Gear 5 - Pre-teen Boy Gear
Gear 6 - Manly Gear
Gear 7 - Big Muscles Gear
I only like gear 6 and 7 to be honest. Additionally, this tool of all immense men comes with a gigantic lock to keep it secure. The lock is the size of a bull's testicles and tells people you don't screw around with locking up your bike tank. It tells would-be-thieves "Hey asshole, touch this bike and I'll appear from the bushes ready to club you with a two-by-four".
Bike is for $150 OBO (and don't give me no panzy prices)
Bike for sale
What kind of bike? I don't know, I'm not a bike scientist. What I am though is a manly guy looking to sell his bike. This bike is made out of metal and kick ass spokes. The back reflector was taken off, but if you think that deters me from riding at night, you're way wrong. I practiced ninja training in Japan's mount Fuji for 5 years and the first rule they teach about ninja biking is that back reflectors let the enemy know where you are. Not having a rear reflector is like saying "SCREW YOU CAR, JUST TRY AND FIND ME".

Moo!
The difference between Jim and me.....
We were out walking this morning and we stopped to watch some cows. We discovered that at the exact same time, both of us were respectively thinking:
Jim: "Man, that's a lot of meat!"
Me: "Man, that's a lot of fur!"
Jim was thinking about eating the cow and I was thinking about petting the cow!
That's the difference between a hunterman and his vegetarian wife!

Goalie Girl
Gracie played her first time as an ice hockey goalie this weekend. She got all decked out in the gear and went out on the ice to have girls take shots on her. It was great! And she LOVED it! So now we are scrambling around trying to find goalie gear for her. If we bought it all brand new, it would be over $1k! So we are trying to find used stuff.
Stay tuned because this could be fun to watch develop.
This morning, I started wondering what boy would ever want to date a girl goalie! Man...she is a tough girl!

Shop til you Drop
Every summer right before school, Auntie D and Gracie have a tradition of doing a big school shopping trip. They do this to spend some girlie time together and because I hate to shop....so if Auntie D wants her niece to look good, she has to be hands on! This is the report from this years event:
First was lunch at Ivar's Fish and Chips. We sat outside, just like we did when we had sushi last year. :o)
Then we found some adorable Pumas at Nordy's. Also a new Roxy hoodie, a couple of tops and some shorts.
Then we hit Pumpkin Patch and found some long pants, shorts, and another top. She did a really good job of mixing and matching so just about everything can be worn with the other.
She didn't want to look for a winter coat - I think she was pooped!
But we did muster the energy to pick up some ice cream at Cold Stone to eat on the way home.
And we remembered Drew ... apparently he's been driving her crazy about a specific kind of hat he wants so Gracie picked that out at Quicksilver, together with a matching wallet.
What a fun time. We chatted and chatted. She is growing so quickly though that this was probably our last year shopping at Pumpkin Patch and the kid's shoe department at Nordy's!

A reason to celebrate
My big brother has been looking for a job for a couple months. The search was very emotional for the whole extended family. We are all very close and share in the worries and celebrations of every family member.
His job search took him to different industries and different states. I am thrilled to report that he has accepted a job in California in the environmental industry. California is great because it is still close to us! And the environmental industry is up and coming. It is the industry to break into right now. And I hope to utilize his newly acquired knowledge when it is time for me to make a change.
So....our family is doing frequent celebratory happy dances!

3 (more) reasons I love my company
1. Today I went down to the quad area at lunch to get fresh fruit from the farmers market
2. On the way there, I ran into a co-worker who was on the way to a ukelele group (yep - we have groups of people who get together to play ukelele at lunchtime!)
3. After lunch, 45 of us are going to play softball, ping pong, horse shoe and drink beer!

First day of school
The report from Drew on his first day of Junior High was good. He said it was boring because they went over the rules in each class. Of course, as a mom and a compliance officer, I am THRILLED that they spend time outlining all the rules!
I was so proud that he was so organized and responsible. He came home knowing everything that he needed to do to be ready the next day and took care of it all himself. All those years of pushing for accountability is paying off. He really is quite self sufficient.
He still feels like he made the right decision to go to this school which is all I can hope for at this point!

Bread Class
On Saturday, my Dad and I took a bread making class at a local culinary school. It was great fun. It was from about 10 am to 2 pm and we made three things:
* pizza dough
* franchese bread
* focaccia bread
All were outstanding! I took the class because I have always wanted to make bread but was intimidated by working with yeast. The instructor was a master baker and she was great. We got all kinds of tips that really make all the difference.
I think I will try making focaccia bread tomorrow to go with our home made pea soup!

Junior High
Today we sent our baby off to Junior High! Our baby is now 5 feet 6 inches tall and 130 pounds.
He got up at 6 am and did not have to be ready until 7:30, when his carpool arrived to pick him up. I was not sure I was actually going to be able to get him out of bed....his alarm went off and he never budged. It was so loud it woke me up in my room! I had to go in and get the dog to jump on him to wake him up.
Will keep you posted on how the day went.

New School
We had Drew's orientation for his new school last nite and it was great. I am truly not sure who is more excited....Drew or me.
These statements say it all....on our way out, Jim says, "I am so excited, I wish I could play sports here!"....to which I respond, "I am so excited, I wish I could go to class here!" Therein lies the difference between mom and dad! Drew just shook his head.
We spent about 2 hours at orientation. Drew got his classes and got to walk around to each of his classrooms and even got to meet his math teacher. We also purchased additional books, PE clothes and some school t-shirts and a sweatshirt. There is no uniform at this school but the kids have to wear clothes that don't have logos or emblems on them. To make it easy, they have the option of wearing t-shirts with the school name and logo on it. We made three trips to his locker to practice the lock! It was tough at first but after a bunch of practice, he got it down.
I think we may take another trip there today to check it out again. And this time, little sis wants to go....she was very interested in hearing every detail!

Lemon Tea Bread
This is a great recipe....I wish I had a slice of it right now!
Lemon Tea Bread
Ingredients:
- ½ cup butter, softened
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 grated lemon rind
- 2 eggs
- 1 ½ cup flour
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- ½ cup milk
- Pinch of salt
- ½ cup chopped walnuts (optional)
Glaze:
- ¼ cup sugar
- Juice of 1 large lemon
Preheat oven to 375
Cream butter, sugar and lemon rind.
Sift the flour, baking powder and salt together.
Alternately add the milk and the dry ingredients to the butter/sugar mixture, combining well after each addition.
Pour into a greased and floured loaf pan and bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until the top of the loaf is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into loaf comes out clean.
While loaf is baking, stir together the sugar and lemon juice until combined.
When loaf comes out of the oven, poke all over the top of the loaf with a toothpick or fork to make small holes. Pour the glaze over slowly so it absorbs into the bread.
Let the loaf cool on a rack for ten minutes in the pan, then turn out of the pan and let cool completely.

More absurdity....
If camping like a sardine was not weird enough, on Tuesday nite we went to Banjo nite at a local pizza party! It was not just one banjo player - it was a whole herd of them - about 15 of them! They hand out song books so you can sing along - we sang a John Denver song but changed the words to be more appropriate for us:
Country road, take me home
To the place, I belong
West Virginia, PONTOON MAMA
Take me home, country roads
The banjo band has a big following and has what I can only call, "bango roadies". Picture this: the same people show up week after week, sing a long, wear wigs (not for style, but because they are so old they have no hair), use walkers and hearing aids!
It was a crazy experience.

Absurd Camping
This last weekend we went camping right on the beach in a State Beach campground. It was absurd camping. Absurd because we were sandwiched in between 30 other campers. It is a spot that is great because its literally right on the beach but we are not use camping 15 feet from another person! Plus it was a public place so people were walking down the sidewalk - which was 1 foot from the camper - all day. The benefit of being on the beach makes it worth going there once every 5 years....but I am not sure I could handle more than that.
Plus, we camped in a camper which we are not use to. The kids thought it was great. They each had a comfy bed and a real pillow - instead of sleeping on the ground or on the boat with a rolled up sweatshirt as a pillow!
The morning we were there, there was triathalon. We had a great time watching it. They swam in the ocean for the swimming part and ran down the beach for the running part, so we watched pretty much the whole thing. I especially enjoyed watching while eating my cinnamon roll and thinking about how dumb triathalons are! (Read: I was jealous I was not doing it!)

Hockey Girl
Didn't take long for a hockey coach to call us about Gracie! They are really trying to develop girls hockey and are looking for players. They are drooling at the thought of getting a girl who is athletic, tall and wants to play goalie. They are willing to do anything for her that we want - individual hockey coaches, work with her at Gretzky hours, finding her equipment, etc.
We just need to decide if we want to make the financial and time committment. Stay tuned.
