Cabin Kitchen

In the midst of the helicopter drama, we were considering updating the kitchen at the cabin.  I had a contractor in to look at the job and we are waiting for a quote.

Jim and I went down to a tile and granite place today to get some ideas on what we liked.  After a couple hours of looking around we settled on this look:  granite counter top and pebble backsplash.

We still need to check out the quote to see if it reasonable to get it done - we are not sure what to expect because the market in the mountains is so different from the Bay Area.

Concussion update

Grace saw her regular doc today and we got a referral to brain rehab.  I was concerned that their regular protocal for return to sports after a concussion is a slow return once symptoms go away.  But this was not a normal, "oh I got by bell rung" concussion.  And it was not the first one.  So we asked to talk to someone who deals with brain injuries on a more regular basis and might be able to guide us on when to return to soccer/surfing/skiing.  Because I certainly don't feel comfortable with her going into a soccer game in 2 weeks and heading a soccer ball!

The doc did an interesting test.  He had her stand on one foot which she did without a problem but then he had her stand with her feet in a line (one foot in front of the other) and she could not balance at all!  I was shocked.  Other tests were fine.

Drama week

Apparently this is drama week for us.

Tonite we went to dinner at Cochina while and we were eating an old man came in and looked ill.  Turns out he had fallen and hit his head when coming in the restaurant.  He was sitting at a table and his wife was talking to him while the waitress got him some water.

I was watching and could tell something was wrong so Jim got up and went to see if they needed help.  He was slumped in his chair not looking well so I got up to help too.  The wife reported he was 79 years old and had stage 4 colon cancer.  He had just been in Sonora to get blood work done and was getting chemo tomorrow.

As we were talking to them he started feeling nauseous and lost consciousness.  We had the waitress call 911 while we kept his head up so as not to compromise his airway.  He came to after a few minutes and seemed to be more alert.

Firefighters showed up and we went back to our dinner.

We did not need anymore drama this week but felt happy to be able to help them and provide a little comfort.  They were a sweet old couple.

Bad Day

The day that we went on the hike to Red Hills we came back to town to eat and when we got out of the truck we saw this - a whole bird had gotten stuck in the grill of a truck parked next to us.  It was so weird to see.  Bad day for the bird.

Target Practice

Yesterday while Grace and I were napping, Drew was doing a little target practice off the deck.  I was cracking up this morning when I saw his targets when I was out for my walk (above).  I think this is his rendition of a squirrel.  Maybe next time Amanda should draw it.  I think hers would be a better likeness.  Good think I am not paying to send him to art school.

Concussion Update

It has been about 48 hours since Grace crashed and took a ride in a helicopter.  And I am thrilled to say that she is doing better and better.  Her memory is coming back slowly and she can now remember Christmas Day and some  of the things that happened the morning of the accident (picking up Grandma Anna, going thru the gate of Yosemite and getting a new pass).

She still has memory gaps and is having a little trouble with short term memory but she does not have a headache and is not asking the same questions over and over.  She is napping a lot and taking it very easy.  I keep feeling like we dodged a bullet and I am so, so, so thankful that it was not worse.  I know 6 months of low risk activity will be hard on her but when I think about what could have been, it is a small price to pay.

The prayers and positive thoughts have been coming in at a rapid speed and we can feel them for sure.  Thanks to all for keeping her in their thoughts.  This has been one of those experiences that we will never forget.

Here are some of the pictures from earlier in the day when we were playing Farkle and listening to the band while sitting outside in the beautiful California sun.

Skiier Down

On the slopes, waiting for ski patrol
Grace took spill yesterday at Badger Pass and was ski patrolled off the mountain and then put in a helicopter to a Modesto trauma center.

She went over a tiny little jump and ended up face down in the snow with her arms under her.  (We have a video of her face down)   Drew was the first on the scene and turned her over.  She was conscious and crying.  They talked and she said she would sit up.  And then Drew said all in one motion she jumped up and and headed to her skis.

They started to head down the slopes and got part way down and she stopped saying she thought she was going to throw up.  Jim stopped with her and Drew headed down to tell me that she had crashed and he thought we were going to be taking her to the hospital.  As soon as he started talking I immediately had the feeling that she was going for a helicopter ride.

Drew and I went out to the slopes and looked up and we could see Jim and Grace stopped.  We each went in separate directions to find a ski patrol and sent them up the hill.  Drew ran and and jumped on the lift so he could ski down and help.

He got there and immediately started helping the ski patrol and trying to comfort his sister.  They assessed her on the slopes and strapped her to a board and dragged her down behind a snow mobile.  Drew had to ski right next to the sled because she was hysterically calling for him and got more frantic if she could not see him.

She was brought into the medical hut and assessed by a nurse.  The first decision was to move her via ambulance to Fresno.  But as they started assessing her, we quickly made the decision that a helicopter was the best decision.  She was confused and repetitive and super agitated.  She kept calling for Drew and making him promise he wouldn't leave her.  It was heart wrenching.  He was amazing thru the whole thing.

Loading up to head up to the top of the hill at the back of the pic to get loaded onto the helicopter

Here is the helicopter she was in as it flew away
Unfortunately there was only enough room in the helicopter for the two flight nurses and Grace.  We had to drive 3 hours to the hospital.  It was a loooong looong ride. We drove to the cabin, dropped off the dogs and the people and Jim and I headed down the hill.

We got the to hospital they could not find her in the system because she was still listed as "Trauma, November" not her name.   They quickly figured out she was the female in Trauma Bay 3 and escorted me in while Jim parked the car.  I turned the corner into Grace's room to see this (above).  What a relief!

She did not remember anything about the day and could only remember a little bit of the time at the hospital.  She did not remember them cutting off her clothes or being xrayed.  And sadly, she did not remember the helicopter ride!

The diagnosis was concussion.  Tests showed no other injuries, which was interesting as she was complaining about left side pain on the mountain and the nurse was concerned about broken ribs or liver/spleen injuries.

She was super goofy at the hospital.  She was no longer agitated but was repetitive - asking the same questions over and over:

Where is Drew?

Who is at the cabin?

Did they cut off my Jacket?  I like that jacket.  It's so swaggy.

Look at the swaggy socks they gave me.

She did not remember anything about the week before except that we went skiing on Monday but she thought it was at Bear instead of Dodge.

She told the Physicians Assistant that she was powering all the computers with her heartbeat thru the monitors on her chest?!?!?!  What????  Where did that come from.

We talked with multiple doctors who said she could go home and be watched at home because the only treatment for a concussion is rest.  They had done brain scans and everything was normal so there was no reason to keep her.  So we left the hospital and headed back to the cabin.  It was a long trip.  She was super nauseous and had the window down the whole way.  She was in the front seat and I was in the back seat wind tunnel at temperatures hovering around 30 degrees!  Jim was driving with a hood on.

Grace slept thru the nite and felt much better this morning.  She seems to be cognitively better and her head does not hurt.

Trauma, November

Obsessed with her swaggy socks

A stabbing victim came in and Jim was playing the role of Scoop MaGee

This is what was left of her jacket

Other highlights of the day:

Tina played sherpa and hauled all our gear and dogs to the car....including Grandma Anna

Marty moved both cars to the loading area and left the key turned in the Tahoe so that when we tried to head out the Tahoe battery was dead.  It only delayed us 2 minutes - the amount of time it took Drew to rip the cables out of the back of the Tahoe and hook them up.

Grace told the nurse at the Medical Shack that her awesome muscles were to big and awesome for the blood pressure cuff!

A parking lot attendent tried to send Marty down the parking lot a different way and Marty pointed up at the helicopter and said "that's my family in there, I am going that way."

Distracting Grace in the Medical Hut with Amanda's chin pimple.  Grace would get hysterical and I would say, "hey, look here at Amanda's pimple."  Grace would move her eyes and be distracted for a little while.

Grace going back and forth between being terrified of the IV needle and being ok with it.  At one point very clearly saying, "no thank you, I don't want a needle."

Red Hills

Snack at the top of the hill
We went hiking today at Red Hills.

It was a classic boondgoggle where we got lost, did some backtracking, drove up a dirt road, drove thru mud puddles and then stopped on the top of a hill for a snack!

Then we went hiking!  We were not quite sure where we were going and thought we might be lost a couple times.  In fact, Amanda picked out a place to dig here own grave in case we didn't make it out.  It had a beautiful view.

Luckily we made it out after 2.5 miles and had another snack.

Good clean fun!

Christmas Dinner

We had a great dinner at the Groveland Hotel for Christmas dinner.  It was not "great" in terms of quality and service that you would find in the Bay Area but with super low Groveland expectations, it exceeded them!  The food was good and it was awesome that no one had to cook!

Jim and his folks had prime rib, Drew had duck and Grace and I had a vegetarian pasta.

It was festive and fun to be at such an old, historic restaurant.  We all decided we would definitely do it again.

Movie Reviews

We have watched a bunch of movies at the cabin which is something we never have time for at home.  Here is my review for each of them:

Chef:  Must watch.  Great messages and great relationships.  Interesting to see how they portray the food business.  Made Drew want to buy a food truck and make it into a Nacho Truck.

Sex Tape:  Hilarious.  Made me laugh out loud.  Great characters.  So silly!

The Other Woman:  Another laugh out loud movie.  Hilarious characters that turn into great friends.  The dog was awesome!

Wish You Were Here:  My least favorite and funny that we watched it on Christmas since it is a movie about a Jewish family.  Only my least favorite because there are some sad parts.  I don't want sadness on vacation....or ever!  Has the two main characters from the tv show Scrubs, which is one my favorite all time tv shows.

Christmas 2014

We spent Christmas 2014 at the cabin with Grandma Anna and Grandpa Roy.  Grandma Kathy and Grandpa Tom were supposed to be there also but some last minute illnesses had them decide to stay in EDH with the Uncle B's family, which was a treat for them!

We had fondue for Xmas eve and then opened gifts on Xmas morning.

After opening gifts and having some breakfast, Jim and I went for a hike with the dogs and then we all watched a movie (Wish You Were Here).

Christmas dinner is at the Groveland Hotel.  It will be our first time there and we are excited for the boondoggle.
Streak, crab and shrimp fondue

Mushroom and 2 different cheese foundues

Our stockings have been missing for years and we finally found them!

I needle pointed each of us our own stockings!

Paul Bunyon

We started chopping down the tree that fell today.

Inside of the tree had a fluffy nest!

Taking time to sniff the trees
