Day One: We drove from Seattle to the Edmonds Ferry and then drove 2 more hours to the Visitor Center at Olympic National Park to pick up our permit from a ranger named Pablo McCloud! He was like something straight out of a comedy called National Park Service Unplugged! They were operating in a FEMA trailer while their building was being renovated and had only been in it for about 2 hours. His first comment to us was "all those people in Houston are saying, 'where the hell is our trailer'"! The computers were failing so we got an old fashioned hand written permit and were lucky enough to change our reservation at Cat Basin (which was an extra 3 mile up and down hike) to Heart Lake.
Once we got our permit, we drove another hour to the trail head - Sol Duc - and had a picnic lunch.
Then we started off our hike full of promise and yummy food! Below is the junction where we went right to go up the mountain and where on day four, we came off the mountain on the left.

After 4 miles of a smoky and very sweaty hike UPHILL, we got to our camp spot at Deer Lake.
