Daring Greatly replaced by People Magazine! |
Backpacking into the wilderness for 4 days takes a lot of planning. There are three things to consider:
1. How much food do I need
2. What supplies do I need
3. How do I keep my pack as light as possible.
Once we got to Seattle we refined everything we were bringing. Grace and I had it pretty dialed in with pack weights of 28 and 29 pounds. But Susan was starting with a pack weighing 36 pounds!
We went thru her pack item by item and lightened her load. In the picture of the scale you can see things we removed - a brush (which she put back in), a mixing spoon, gorilla tape, a plastic mug with a lid, toothpaste (she shared) and a wrap for a sprained wrist or ankle (I already had one). Probably the best thing we removed was her book called "Daring Greatly" about living your life more daringly! We replaced it with a People magazine which brought endless amusement the whole trip! Susan would suddenly blurt out pop culture facts!
We must have packed and repacked 50 times! |
Susan had a scale to weigh each item |
Packed and ready to head out to Leavenworth |
We look pretty mild mannered but turned into Bad Ass Superheroes on the trail! |
Once Susan, Grace and I had our packs pretty dialed in, Shannon showed up with her pack and we went thru the process again. That allowed us to further remove unneeded items. Shannon ended up with a pack weight of 33 pounds.
The pack weights were estimates since we all added last minute items including the water purifier pump (me), cheese (me, Susan and Shannon), breakfast and snacks (all) and water (all). Interesting to note is that a liter of water weighs two pounds and we each carried two liters or more with us!
We left Susan's house near Seattle at about 2 pm (after stopping to get a watch battery and pine nuts) and drove about 2 hours to the small town of Leavenworth, WA where we would have dinner and stay over nite.
