On the way to the vet |
4th of July was a rough, rough day. We were sitting around playing nibs while waiting for Brian, Diana and the kids to come and Daisy started having what we thought was a stroke. Her eyes were darting back and forth, her head was twitching, her eyebrows were twitching, she couldn't walk and she was incontinent. We found a vet it Sonora who met us about an hour and 15 minutes after this all started.
By the time we got to the vet she was better - more alert, way less twitching - but could not walk.
The vet narrowed it down to 3 things:
1. A stroke that is common in geriatric dogs.
2. Poisoning caused by getting into rotten food.
3. Poisoning caused by a venomous bug bite.
He decided it was most likely a bug bite of some kind because a stroke would take longer to recover from and food poisoning this bad would make her vomit. He gave her a shot of a Benadryl. We took her home to watch her and although she was more and more alert, she could barely walk until late into the evening. She was like a drunken sailor - bobbing and weaving. We actually barricaded the stairs so she wouldn't fall down them (Diana's idea) because it was was a definite risk.
She continued to get better slowly and actually walked out to go potty by herself at about 11 pm.
We will do Benadryl for another day and see how she does. Based on what the vet told us to expect, it sure seems like he was right and it was a bug bite. Plus yesterday morning Hops was after a bug on the deck that looked like a wasp on steroids with blue wings and a giant stinger. When I saw her looking at it, it was already injured. So maybe Daisy got it first and got stung by it.
It was a rough day. We were sure this was the end for her and we are sooooo thankful we get more time with my sweet, old girlie with an old soul.
On the way home from the vet - I was sitting way in the back with her. |
