This is a blog by a "real" mom for other "real" moms. I am no fakey who is wonderful at everything....I do a lot of different things and try to do them well...but when it comes right down to it, I am just an average mom trying to do the right thing to ensure my family is happy and healthy and that my kids grow up able to take care of themselves and get out of my hair.

Tea Time
Gracie and I went to tea yesterday with 3 of her sporty friends and their moms. The idea was to get these girl jocks out of their comfort zones! It was full of laughter and giggles! The best part was that the only time they were all focused was when we were talking about the SJ Sharks and their former goalie, Nabby!
OH! Actually was the best part was when they went straight from tea to indoor soccer and every girl who went to tea scored a goal....and Gracie scored three!

Book Review - Life of Pi
Our book club book this time is "Life of Pi" by Yann Martel. It won the Man Booker Prize - whatever that is!
It is about a boy who is relocating with his family and their zoo animals. And the ship they are on, sinks. The boy ends up in a boat with a tiger.
Sounds a little far fetched but it was highly recommended, so I settled in to read it. I read the first 50 pages when one of my friends said, "the whole first section is all philosophical. He doesn't even get into the boat til the second section".
I had experienced enough philosophical already, so I skipped straight the second section!
The second section seemed like it took 500 words to say something that should have been said in 25.
So I got bored really quickly and skipped to the last 10 pages.
DONE! Book read. Book got the thumbs down!

Mustache Inquiries
This is a goofy story.
Here is the background. Mr C is a friend of ours who is totally easy going and up for any type of ridiculous adventure we have up our sleeve. He also has a super witty sense of humor and comes up with one liners out of no where that totally crack us up. (He is the author of, "don't be such a "Nancy" Drew"! Mr C also is one of our few friends who has a mustache. Over the holidays, a bunch of us were together, without Mr C, when we saw a guy with a huge handle bar mustache. That got us thinking....
The next time we saw Mr C, we were ready with these questions:
1. Do you know Tom Selleck?
2. Do you wash and condition your mustache?
3. If your wife and your mustache were both in dire danger, which would you save?
4. Do you worry about your daughter growing a mustache?
5. Did you pose for this artwork?
5. If the US outlawed mustache's, would you move to Canada?
6. Do you have any other mustaches?
7. Is your mustache insured thru Lloyds of London?
8. Do you require special tools to groom your mustache?
9. Are young children sometimes afraid of your mustache?
10. If you divorced your wife, who would get custody of the mustache?
11. Did your parents have mustaches?
and my favorite:
12. Are these, or are these not, your parents:

Trappist Monk
My Grandpa who died last summer was a Trappist monk for 6 years - here is an article about that current order of Monks:
Monks make, donate casket for youngest victim in Arizona shooting
By Eric Marrapodi and Kara Devlin
A group of Trappist monks in Iowa have donated a handmade casket to bury 9-year-old Christina Green, the youngest victim in the Saturday attack that killed six and wounded 13 others in Arizona.
Sam Mulgrew, the general manager of Trappist Caskets in Peosta, Iowa, told CNN a family representative of the Greens reached out to the monks at New Melleray Abbey near Dubuque after her death. The custom-made casket arrived in Tucson, Arizona, Wednesday morning.
“We didn’t want to send an adult coffin that would be too big, we wanted something just for her,” said Mulgrew, who is not a monk but who manages the 11-year-old casket business that is part of the abbey.
The casket, crafted from red oak, was made especially for 9-year-old Christina, Mulgrew said. She died after a gunman opened fire at a constituents event held by U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was critically wounded in the shooting.
Christina’s funeral is scheduled for Thursday in Tucson.
The lid of the casket was inscribed with her name, date of birth and death, and a cross. The family also will receive five small keepsake crosses hewn from the same wood as the casket, Mulgrew said.
Before the casket was sent from the monastery in Iowa to Arizona, the monks gave the casket a special blessing inside their chapel on Tuesday.
The monks are Roman Catholic and are part of the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance. They make and sell custom caskets with “reverence for nature,” according to the Trappist Caskets website.
“Along with prayer and study, our casket ministry is an extension of our sacred work. We labor quietly with our hands in support of our life of simplicity,” says a statement on the website.
Mulgrew said when a child dies it hits the monks particularly hard. He said they don’t like to sell children’s caskets; instead, a “child casket fund” they started often covers the costs.

New Game
Grace and I played a great new game when we were out for a walk tonite --- "guess what people ate for dinner".
We would pass a house and each of us would take a guess as to what the people in that house had for dinner. Led to some good conversations!

More strangeness at the gym...
On Monday morning I went to the gym and opened the door tot he locker I usually use. The lockers are first come first serve and you bring your own lock. Boy was I shocked when there was a box of pregnancy tests in the locker!
My first thought was, "not good that someone needs to take the test at the gym instead of at home"!
Even stranger was the box was still there at lunchtime when I went back for yoga.

Soups on!
Last nite, my family had pot roast, which I do not eat. So I made myself a pot of lentil soup that turned out delicious!
It had lentils, onions, garlic, carrots, zucchini, veggie broth, a bay leaf, and thyme. The only thing that it was missing was some spinach. But I did not have any.
Yum!

Last hurrah
We did one "last hurrah" trip to the snow before coming back to reality of work and school. we drove up to our sledding and playing spot, started a bonfire and built an igloo!
On the way there, the road got a little sketchy and I bailed out of the truck after we almost slid off the road! I took my doggies, my kids and my firend and waited for Jim and Marty to turn the truck around.
We had some roasted marshmellows in the snow!
